30 Day Paleo Challenge Start Monday June 14th

CrossFit Lions is starting a 30 day paleo challenge beginning next Monday morning. For all of you looking to take your performance to the next level or shed unwanted body fat, this is the challenge for you. There are many clients that already either eat this way or have done an extended paleo push and have seen remarkable gains. Chris "Murder" Kennedy has lost over 22lbs by combining CrossFit with a Paleo diet and more importantly his fitness has skyrocketed since he started.

Now doing an extended Paleo push isn't easy, especially in the first few days but that is why if we do it as a group we can help support each other and not allow people to fall back on the sugar wagon. I will setup a separate blog were you will be required every day to post what you have eaten and more importantly ask any questions you would like to ask about supplementation and recipe ideas. This will be our forum to also share your feedback on the diet and how it is going for you. Physically having to write down what you are using as fuel is the most effective method in keeping with this diet.

Please check out http://whole9life.com/ and click on the whole 30 link for diet specifics. This is a very useful information site and great read. You should also check out www.robbwolf.com. He is CrossFit foremost diet expert (even though he is technically no longer affiliate with CrossFit).

Tanya is going to be helping us with this challenge and there are a lot of other members of the Den who have been implementing this diet for a long time and have lots of good information ( Robyn, Scottt, Annie, Solo, Jenny etc.) I hope each and everyone of them will contribute to answering questions and posting on the blog so we can gather as much information as possible. Every person diet needs are a little bit different. The strict Paleo is a great starting point and you might need tweak it a little bit for your body and lifestyle.

Lots of information to come on this in the next few days so stay tuned to this blog. Who's in?

  1. Scott and I are on the Zone, as I love milk in my coffee and cheeses of all kind!
But I can't believe I am about to write this...
    but I am in!
I have always wondered how Paleo would stack up against the Zone in terms of performance and I am frustrated w my muscleups progression, maybe loosing a few pounds would make it easier to pull myself up!! Or maybe it is crazy talk cuz I am feeling old on my birthday. But count me in!
    Annie :)

I will need a LOT of help and support on this! I LOVE my pb in the morning!

  4. wow... very interesting. i could certainly be down for giving it a shot. I was on the zone diet for awhile and saw pretty decent results and it wasnt that challenging for how i eat anyways. my major concern though is whether or not i can sustain the paleo diet for 30days.

for example: BEER after hockey games. this might sound pathetic but im quite certain it'll be a physical impossibility not to have a beer in the dressing room after a game.

there will also be times when paleo might not be the easiest option - so my question is:

if i fuck up once a week kinda thing, am i still aloud in the treefort?

    stop judging me.

  6. Love this! Just to be clear Chris - is this a Paleo Challenge, or the Whole 30 challenge??? They are slightly different...

If we are doing the Whole 30 - everyone needs to read Melissa's post:

She's all about tough love. No cheats allowed. That includes beer :)

  8. I'm in! I've been researching the Paleo diet for the last few weeks and I think it could really help my results in the gym. Maybe if I lost a few I'd actually be able to pull off an RX pull up. I already log everything I eat but I've never done this one before so I'll definitely need help :)

  9. of course i'm in, i love challenges!!!! i've already been doing the paleo, but not as strict as it says i should. i just got my new paleo cook book, so if anyone wants to borrow it or if you want me to write up some ideas let me know. i love paleo! to be honest i don't miss my starches and unnatural sugars! i didn't lose too much weight but i have noticed i'm improving in a bunch of workouts. So like Robyn said. let me know if you need any help! its always nice to know what quick meals you can make and what you can snack on thats easy. So holler at yo guuuurl if ya need anything :)

    and Knightrider...i'm judging...just kidding! :)

p.s. just recently found out i'm slightly allergic to beer :(

  10. Not to be a party pooper here...but this makes me so sad!!! ahhhhhh i soooo would not be able to commit to this challenge. i am a habitual cheater and would fail miserably the first day...just being honest. No self disiple..don't get inbetween a girl and her chocolate! I would be so miserable without my goodies, everyone would hate me, (if you don't already) so its probably best i don't. i will be 1100000% supportive and not tempt anyone with ice cream and cup cakes in the gym.

good luck to everyone! I'm sorry :(

    FAQ

Q: If you don't participate in this challenge does that make you a horrible human being?

    A: Yes.

  11. Knight Rider how we are going to work the cheats are. Lets say you and I on the stag put back 100grams of alchohol carbs than we owe 100 burpees in the gym. That should be a good incentive to not cheat or at least make you work off the shit carbs.

Tons more information to come on this hopefully tomorrow.

  13. Hmmm - just looked this over and if we're doing it by the Whole30 "book" the one thing they're pretty clear about is NO CHEATS. The intention of the 30 day strict paleo is to give your gut and body a chance to heal from all the processed garbage we put in it every day. Once the 30 days are over you reintroduce foods one at a time to gauge how your body responds - assess your sensitivity - to grains, legumes, dairy etc. If the general consensus though is the burpee penalty for cheats I think we need to have the burpees be accumulated. One beer has about 13 to 15 grams of carbs. A beer a night means 15 burpees - I'd rather you add up the "slips" and do them all at the end. Then you're less likely to think "oh - it's just 45 burpees tomorrow" and think "Shit! I gotta knock out 600 burpees at the end of this month!"
    Thoughts??

  14. I think you're either in 100% or you're out, no cheats! 30 days is not hard people, fighting cancer is hard, giving up ice cream and beer for a month is not hard, if i can do it anybody can. A single cheat will ruin the effect of the “reset button” you are trying to push.

  15. I agree with Solo...i just need a list of food to by - what i can eat - how often - and I'm good.

  16. I meant buy - stop judging!!!

  17. Way to quote Melissa Urban Matt ;) That's perspective. That said - that was the spirit with which I put this forward. It's also what Robb Wolf said at his seminar - 30 days, no cheats, heal your gut then reintroduce what you feel you can't live without.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I agree. Doing it with no cheats is without a doubt the way to go. However I want to include as many people in this challenge as possible.

Doing the full 30 day challenge is an A+, if you do it with minimal cheats in which you have to pay a penalty for is a solid B.

All I really want people to do is be thinking about what they are eating and be accountable for what they are eating. However they want to accomplish that goal I am all for.

However I want to re state that the 30 day hard core paleo challenge is the way to go and you will truly see the best results if you do that and don't cheat.

  19. list of food to buy would be helpful. no dairy, can we drink almond milk? is it ok to eat alot of nuts? cashews almonds...

  21. I'd like to do a start up meeting on Monday at the gym to run through rules, goals, foods etc. I'll prep handouts and get you pinched for body fat if you're interested in measuring progress. More info to come.

  22. If you go on to the website Jenny has said to go on, it lists the foods you can eat or even google Paleo foods. Its pretty simple, Meats, fish, chicken, Nuts, seeds, fruit and veggies,as much as you like. nothing processed, no dairy, no grains, no legumes. No booooze.

  23. I am in 100% - no cheats

    How's this for inspiration:

Honestly guys - you can all do it if you choose to. Matt and I survived several BBQ's, a huge family party, and I was out of town 3 times for work. Next week I am in Calgary at a mall for 6 days. I have to eat out every meal! I already know what is Paleo friendly at the food court, and it's not alot, but it's not impossible!!

I am pumped, I have been doing lots of reading about the Whole 30 challenge, and Matt and I have discovered some great recipes, the best places to find good meat & veggies etc...so ask away!
